Have you ever heard of duodenal cancer? Meet Mr. Kok Ka Hui, one of the youngest individuals diagnosed with the rare and challenging duodenal cancer. His journey began with gastric issues, ultimately leading to the development of duodenal cancer. Duodenal cancer is a rare type of cancer that starts in the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. It can cause tumours in this area, affecting digestion and nutrient absorption, potentially leading to serious health problems. It empowers individuals with information, emphasises prevention, and unites communities in the global fight against the disease. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am privileged to have Madam Wahidah Binti Ishak, a Stage 4 breast cancer survivor, sharing her remarkable journey with me. Madam Wahidah's message to the survivors out there : 'For those battling cancer, there's no need to worry. Live life without hesitation, pursue your passions, and, most importantly, stay strong. In the face of cancer, inner strength is vital. I hope those around us can offer unwavering support during this challenging journey. Remember, nothing is impossible in life; we must continue to fight and move forward.' I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Madam Wahidah for sharing her story. As always, I wholeheartedly urge all the ladies to prioritize early screenings. Not only does it save money, but it can also save lives.
Today, my colleague, Dr. Saladina Jaszle Bt Jasmin, a Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon, joined me in Episode 5. This is another special episode in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This episode is focused on breast cancer screening, symptoms of breast cancer, and breast cancer surgery. "Don't be afraid to come forward for screening! Screening is essential for early detection. Catching cancer in its early stages makes treatment much more manageable," Dr. Saladina emphasizes. Finally, we are at the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have a genetic counselor, Ms. Yoon Sook Yee, who will be sharing information about genetic testing in breast cancer patients. Breast cancer genetic testing is a medical test designed to determine whether you have gene mutations that increase your risk of developing breast cancer. It specifically checks for gene changes in your DNA, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, which are associated with a higher likelihood of developing breast cancer. This test aids individuals and doctors in making decisions regarding cancer prevention and screening. I hope the podcast for Breast Cancer Awareness Month has provided you with clarity on this topic.
