Managing Localized Pancreatic Cancer in the Elderly 🩺

Sometimes, the standard path isn't the right path. 🛣️
I recently met an 80-year-old Indian gentleman who came to me with a heavy diagnosis: a mass on the head of his pancreas, found during a routine check-up.
He was in a tough spot. With a history of DM, HTN, and IHD, surgery wasn’t an option. He was referred to me for palliative chemotherapy—a heavy burden on a frail, elderly patient.
But looking at him, I hesitated. I knew that standard systemic chemo might do more harm than good to his quality of life. I wanted to be sure, so we ordered a PET scan.
The result changed everything: The disease was localized. It hadn't spread. ✨
Instead of toxic chemo, I offered him SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy)—a non-invasive technique delivering precise, high-dose radiation directly to the tumor while sparing the surrounding organs.
Fast forward 6 months: His latest PET scan shows a fantastic response. But more importantly? He is gaining weight, eating well, and enjoying his daily morning walks again. 🚶🏾♂️🍃
It’s a powerful reminder that we must treat the patient, not just the protocol. Always look for the personalized option.
